Sister Helen and Marti

After morning tea two  nuns from The Sisters of Our Lady of Missions, came to our class. Their names were Sister Helen and Sister Martina. They came to our class and told us about where the money we raise goes to in the world. They also told us about the money we raised at the mission fair for them was much needed by poorer children. The money went towards education in school and families who don’t have enough money- so  their children to get a good education. We hope to see them again at our mission fair next term.

PINHOLE CAMERAS - WEDNESDAY 29 MAY

Having fun with Nick - He was kind enough to drill the holes for our cameras.

After morning tea this morning , Nick  Grant  visited us again and showed  us how to make a pinhole camera. First we went on website to look at it.

He showed us all the different pinhole cameras he made. He made one out of a box brownie, one out of a Pringle's can and one out of a box. The one with the box had a mirror in there so the image would be the right way up! We had turns to look through them and to make it easier to see, he threw a black cloth over our heads so it could  be like a dark room. The image came out sharper and clearer.

Our technology challenge is to design and make a pinhole camera using a website and is due in a week. We  can’t wait to make our pinhole cameras at home!

Recount - CATHOLIC SCHOOLS DAY-2013

Recount - CATHOLIC SCHOOLS DAY-2013
On Wednesday 22 May  St Anne’s celebrated Catholic Schools’ Day. Every class celebrated either by having a party, a shared lunch or watching a movie.
It wasn’t just that. After morning tea, we had a Catholic Schools’ Day Mass and Room 5 led it.
Parishioners and parents were also part of the Mass. Our priest was Fr Dan and our altar servers were Jack Swain and Connor McKean. We started with a welcome by Mary Jane.
I said the opening prayer. We had four hymns : “Go Now”, “We Can Be the Change”, “Send out Your Spirit” and “Grow in Love”. I think we sang them beautifully .We also had some prayers of the faithful.
Mass was magnificent and our art displays about the day was amazing. If you have time come and see them displayed in our foyer.
After Mass we all went back to our classes because by the time Mass was finished, it was lunch time. Room 5 didn’t prepare a shared lunch but we all sat down on the mat and ate together.
After lunch we had fun time and in the middle of it  some Year Ones came in with several trays of scrumpcious food! It was such a surprise .So, while we were enjoying ourselves with games and free time ,we could also have a yummy snack!
Catholic Schools Day was amazing and I can’t wait until the next one!

CELEBRATING CATHOLIC SCHOOLS' DAY - Wednesday 22 May 2013.

I believe that Catholic Schools Day is a great day for Catholic schools to gather. It is a perfect day to show that Catholic schools are different to ordinary schools. Catholics are lucky that we go to Catholic schools so we can learn about God and Jesus every day.
By Mimi

Every three to four years we celebrate Catholic Schools’ Day. On this day  Catholic schools around New Zealand have fun and recognise how important the schools are. I believe that Catholic schools are great because without them children won’t be able to learn about God.

I believe that Catholic schools are good because I can learn about what is good and bad and about God and Jesus. I can also how to say prayers and learn how to meditate.  I know that God and Jesus are my  friends.

THANKS NICK - WE LOOK FORWARD TO HAVING YOU BACK!

At the end of the day, Finn thanked Nick on behalf of Room 5 and Mrs Reddy. Mrs Reddy also gave Nick a gift. We think that Nick is a very good photographer and hope he can come back to help us design and make our own pinhole cameras.                                                                               By Lingas

THE INTERVIEW - ALL QUESTIONS ANSWERED!

Photography is about capturing any kind of image.

Nick was training in about 3 ½ years.

3. What do you think of a camera?
They are amazing they capture in time, some photos make us laugh and some photos make us hungry. Some are powerful enough to stop us in our tracks.

The first camera is called an obscura.

MIMI IN THE LIMELIGHT AND SMILE !

Mr Grant wanted to take a photo of one of us in our class. Mrs Reddy chose me to be the one in the photo. To set up the photo Mr Grant got a bright light and connected it to the camera with a wire so that when he took the photo the light would flash. When it flashed, the light was  too bright and  hurt my eyes.To make the light dimmer Mr Grant opened a white umbrella and hooked in front of the light. He went over to his medium format camera clicked. In the first shot the colour wasn’t right so he told me to hold a strip with black and white colours on it. The colour was better. Next he got Sam to hold a giant circle which was white on one side and gold on the other. The gold side made me a bit more tan and the white side made me less tan.
At the end he thanked me for being a good model and my photo looked amazing.

PHOTOGRAPHER NICK EXPLAINS AND DEMOS.

Today Nick shows to us the tripod. He told us about a camera called the medium format. It has a digital memory to store all its photos. The digital camera has special lenses on the camera which can zoom in and out.
My thoughts it takes lots of hard work to become a professional photographer.

A CLOSER LOOK AT CAMERAS -OLD AND NEW.

Looking at old and new cameras

We are looking at all of the cameras dating back to the 1900s. The oldest camera that was there was called The Antique Camera which is worth a lot of money these days. The second oldest was a very famous camera, the Box Brownie. It has two view finders one is for landscape and the other one is for portrait. They were very hard to see through.
The third camera was the Twin Reflex. Which takes a photo when you push down a leaver that is on the side of the camera.
Next oldest was  the View Finder. It uses a light sensitive film which people used to have to take to the chemist to get it processed.
The last and the best was  the Digital Camera. It uses no film but it does use an SD card that you can take to a camera shop and get the photos printed.                                           By Grace and Gracyn
