Ocean Pollution
Have you ever thought of Ocean pollution
and how it effects our seas? I chose this topic after my family and I went to San Diego sea world in June this year. There was a show about the shamu killer whale and at the end of it I learned something very important about sea pollution.
Did you know that the biggest threat to ocean mammals is pollution?
It really made me think of how people can help to fix this problem.
So let me ask you another question.
Did you know that thirty seven million gallons of oil are accidently spilt into oceans every year by huge tankers?
In total, sixty million gallons of oil end up in the ocean every year.
Many sea animals are badly affected .Think of ocean birds.
When oil sticks to birds feathers they split .Most birds try to lick off the oil but end up damaging their internal organs because they swallow oil while doing so.
The next Marine animal I want inform you about is the fur seal.
They cannot escape predators when oil sticks to their flippers.
They can also starve because their food gets contaminated.
Fish are also affected by oil because it clogs their gills and stops them from breathing.
Did you know that cars also pollute the ocean?
What happen is poisonous car fumes come out of the exhaust pipes,
evaporate into the atmosphere and become acid rain.
This poisonous acid rain eventually ends up in the ocean it killing many fish and plants over a period of time .When toxic waste harms an organism it can be passed on through the food chain. One toxic organism gets eaten by another larger animal and can end up being our sea food.
For example smaller fish eats the poisoned plants which is eaten by a bigger fish ,which is eaten by us - humans.
In conclusion we are all responsible for keeping our oceans clean and I am glad that I went to Sandiego SeaWorld because, not only did I have so much fun but I learned what we do on land can effect sea life.
