S.E. Zones Sport Tournament

At  9.20 last Tuesday, the netball girls and  soccer  boys  from Room 4,5 and 6 went  to  Harley Park  on  a  red bus to  take  part  in part in our zones sport  tournament.

We  played  against five  other  schools. I played goal  defence. In the Junior competition our  netball  team  got  3rd  place.

My  grandad  and  my  dad  came to watch  the  games  and  made  a  video of  me.

I liked  playing against all the  schools  and  really loved having fun with my  classmates.        By Zana

                     Sports Description
I am writing about cricket which is played by males and females in many countries.

There are 11 players in each cricket team. One team is batting and the other one is a fielding team. Two bats men line up at each end of the pitch in front of the wickets which have 3 sticks and bale. A bowler from the other team bowls the ball to one batsman, who hits it out as far as they can, then both batsmen run between the wickets to score runs for their team.

The teams change over when all the batsmen are caught out, and the team who finish with the most runs wins the match.

Players need a bat, cricket ball, 2 sets of wickets, knee pods, gloves for the bowlers and wicket keeper.

A form of the cricket called ‘Kilikits’ started in Samoa and it is Samoa’s national sport. It is played with long, three-sided bats, and the balls are very hard rubber balls wrapped in pandanus.

SPORTS STUDY IN ROOM 5

We have been learning about the importance of being active through sports.
Here are some descriptions of sports that some of us wanted to find out about.
SOFT BALL

Softball is a team sport played by nine players on a diamond shaped field both men and woman play softball.

The game is played to get as many runs as possible. To get the runs a player has to hit the soft ball as far as he can. Once the ball is hit the batter runs to score.

There are a number of pieces of equipment used include a soft ball, bat, glove, home plate and bases. A helmet is very important and must be worn by the batter and catcher.

Soft ball was invented in1887 in Chicago as an indoor game. It was called musball. To be a good softball player you have to be fit, catch a ball well, run fast and be able to bat far.

In NZ soft ball is more popular than baseball.  The Black Soxs are the current world champions and the Junior Black Soxs are second in the world.

ST ANNE'S FEAST DAY 2014

Today we celebrated  St Anne’s feast day and Grandparents' Day. Each class  prepared a song to sing or dance to. It was great to see so many of our grandparents come to the concert.
Laveton  led the assembly. Next  Railynnetta did a reading from Sirach and Psalms 103. We then  had prayers of the faithful by Paula, Tilly, Macarius, Finn and Taurean before  Mr explained a power point on St Anne.
Next Room 1 sang a funky hat song. They danced  and
smiled. Their singing was clear and beautiful. Room 2 sang  a HAPPY BIRTHDAY song.  They were having fun with some funny dance moves. Room 4 sang the Commonwealth Games song, with our New Zealand flag.

After room 4 had finished we sang a grandparents’ song with  instruments going with the beat.
Last of all room 6 had a song called Happy by Pharrell Williams. While room 6 sang  the song Amelia did her gymnastics in front.
Once each class had finished performing we finished off  with certificates being given out by Mr C. Elisah and Charlie from our class  were the lucky ones .The whole school  sang   “Do the Right Thing” for the  last item.

After play we got ice blocks. They were delicious. It has been  a good day playing sports and having fun.
Thank you St Anne  for guiding  us at chool everyday.
Happy Feast day tomorrow. Kristyl and Elisah

CELEBRATING MAORI WEEK IS IMPORTANT.

We Think It Is imported to celebrate Maori Week because of the following reasons.

Roan- We can speak to Maori people.
Letone- There are a lot of Maori in NZ.
Madeline- Maori  is part of NZ culture.
Finn- Maori are the first of the whenua  and so the Maori language will never die.
Charlie- There are very few Maori speakers in the world.
Alecxis- The Maori culture is special.
Christian- We can communicate in Maori.
Wyatt- We can learn another language than just English.
Zana- We can learn more about Maori people.
Harley- It is good to appreciate different cultures.
Asa- It is fun to learn Maori song and dance.
 KIA ORA.

Why Maori Language Week Is Important.

Tena koutou!
We think that Maori language week is important because a majority of children in our school are Maori and also Maori people are the founders of New Zealand. Learning Maori should be a good experience because not everyone knows how to speak multiple languages and it’s a good skill to have.
One thing to do to celebrate Maori language  is by trying to learn Maori words that you don’t know how to pronounce properly.
In our school we respect and honour Maori culture.
Kia kaha.
