Room 5 First Aid Practical Tests

Every student in Room 5 had a card with some way of saving people that we had to act out. We all followed the doctors ABC steps in each of our tests. Each act was awesome.

BANDAGING

After lunch at 1:30 pm we learned about bandaging. We experienced tying bandages on a friend’s arm to  learn how to help an injured person with a sore hand. We learnt different techniques and we were told not to yank out a piece of glass if there was one lodged in your arm or leg.

It was a short lesson but it was useful.

BURNS AND SCALDS - FIRST AID

After play Stacey talked about burns and fires.

Stacey explained to  us what to do  when you burn yourself or if there is a fire.

She told us to put your hand under the tap for 20 minutes in cold water.

We can burn ourselves making noodles or by the stove while it is on.

Stacey also talked about fires and said if you see something on fire don’t fan it with a tea towel. Turn off the stove and  don’t put water on the fire. Out a damp cloth or lid on it.

Ring 111 straight away if the fire cannot be controlled.

POISONS AND CHOKING

Stacey taught us about poisons and what can be poisonous. They are bleach, bug sprays, bathroom sprays, snakes and  spiders.Too much alcohol and wine is also poisonous.

What would you do if someone is choking? The  first thing you are going to have to do is to try bending them over and try to make them cough it out.Next  start patting on the back five times and if that doesn’t work try wrapping your arms over them and pump on the chest.

PRACTISING UNCONSCIOUSNESS

We then practised what we would do if someone is unconscious.

We have  to use DRSABC (Doctors' ABC).

IF SOMEBODY FALLS OFF A CHAIR AND IS UNCONSCIOUS: FOLLOW THESE STEPS……….

1. Danger: Put everything away so it is safe.

 2. Response: Try and wake up the patient by shaking they’re shoulder and yelling at the patient.

3.Send for Help: Call an ambulance if the patient doesn’t  wake up.

4. Airway: Make sure that the tongue isn’t blocking the air way so use the head tilt -  chin lift so the tongue doesn’t block the airway. 5.Breathing: Check if the patient is breathing by putting your ear near the nose and try to feel the air.

6.Circulation: Check if there is  bleeding and in case the patient vomits, put the knee up and arm across the person  and pull him towards you and wait for the ambulance.

THE DRSABC

Stacy told us about DRSABC…. she explained it like this.

D-Danger When you go to a person that is hurt or needs help the first thing to do is watch out for danger.

R-Response find out if someone is conscious or unconscious by speaking to them.

S-Send for help and call 111 or scream out loud for help.

A-Clear air-way and use the head-tilt chin lift.

B-Breathing which you’ve already done

C-Circulation so always check for bleeding.

ONE DAY RED CROSS COURSE FOR ROOM 5

Yesterday Stacey from the Red Cross came to teach Room 5 the skills  of a People Saver -  to get help and save lives. It was a one day course.
She told us how important it is save someone's
life and we definitely agree and hope to be good first aiders.
By Elizabeth
Dear Parents.

Next Sunday is the 2nd  SUNDAY OF LENT YEAR B .
The students in Room 5 have looked at the Transfiguration story in RE.

SUNDAY  GOSPEL  1 March    Mark 9:2-10
The ancient stories, much like the parables of Jesus,
call us to think very serious about who God is.
In today’s gospel Jesus is beginning his journey
towards Jerusalem and the fate that waits him there.
But the start of that journey is delayed by this
awesome moment of revelation that we know
as the Transfiguration – the moment when
Jesus is glorified and revealed as the beloved
Son of God, Messiah.
REFLECTION/DISCUSSION :
What glimpses of the glory of God do you see in your daily life?
Can you recall an experience, which has revealed another
person to you in a completely new light?
Or, being able to see attributes in
someone that you had previously been unaware of?
ACTION
During this week, try as a follower of Jesus,
to respond to people with greater generosity,
forgiveness,acceptance and love.

PRAYER:

PROFESSION OF FAITH
We believe in God the Father,
who made the whole world.
We believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God,
who was born in Bethlehem
and lived among us,
who died on the cross for us,
and rose from the dead.
We believe in the Holy Spirit
who brings life and love to us all.
We believe that the Church is one family,
and that one day
we will share everlasting life
with God in heaven.
Amen.

Hope to see you at Mass next
Sunday at our Parish and School Mass.

Kind regards
Grace

FIRST STUDENT COUNCIL MEETING 2015

From left to right our Room 5 student reps - James,Talia and Ruby.

At 1.30pm all the students who were selected for the council meeting went to the staff room to meet Miss Coleman.

We first talked about who would be the leaders. Solomon is our leader and Elisah is our deputy.

Next Steve (Social worker)came in and told us about his weekend, and how he went to Harvey Norman to get a freezer. This came with a few soccer balls and a few volley balls which he kindly gave to st Anne’s school. Mitre ten also donated us soccer balls. We are so thankful for the balls .

We will  have a class meeting before the next Student Council  meeting.

ASH WEDNESDAY TODAY .

Today is a day of a special celebration ,the start of Lent. The three special activities we  do during  Lent are   PRAYER,

 FASTING,

ALMSGIVING.

We had a Mass to celebrate Ash Wednesday and it was also our   opening school Mass which  was held in  the hall. Father Dan and was wearing purple clothes. When the Mass started we were well prepared.
We got the cross of ashes on our forehead to remind us to be better people and to help poor people this Lent.
Room 5 students were  amazing singers. My favourite bit was singing the two songs about change and making a difference. I loved the Mass.

THE SCHOOL PICNIC

Last night a lot of the school students went to the picnic tea.
Everyone was allowed to come. We had to bring some food like KFC or Fish and Chips.

We set up a cricket game for everyone to play and we also set up the volley ball net. Before anyone came, Mrs Reddy set up the stereo so everyone could listen to the music.

When we were playing cricket Mr McInnes   was a batter and he hit the ball over the FENCE! ….. we couldn’t get the ball back so we had to use a tennis ball.
TJ took some photos of people. It was AWESOME!

At 11am this morning Bianca from the Christchurch Art Centre came to teach us how to draw portraits. We learnt some history about the origins of this type of drawing which was interesting.

After wards we practised using charcoal to get the feel of how it worked before we started on our own portraits .We used a photo of ourselves and it was fun.
We hope to share our portraits once they are all completed.

Mrs Reddy’s Classroom Newsletter

WELCOME TO OUR CLASS!
Greetings to you all.
I am certain  you  all had a lovely holiday and the children looking forward to making a great start in the new year.
There is a lot to look forward to this term and I am rather excited. It is my goal to provide all students with an educationally challenging, yet fun, experience in my classroom.
You are welcome to discuss anything you wish concerning Room 5 - just arrange a time.
I look forward to parent help and support.
In the first few weeks the students will be guided and supported in keeping the routines to engage in learning at this level. I hope that the children will work on becoming self-propelled learners  and develop this responsibility with a positive attitude.I shall endeavour to do the best I can to ensure their progress in all areas. The  assertive discipline policy in my class is designed to help  those children who l need help in acquiring appropriate behaviours.
CITIZENSHIP
The big concept that weaves through all our learning is CITIZENSHIP which means that most, if not all of our studies, will be around this theme.
In the first few weeks the students will be led to follow class routines to sure that they are good classroom citizens, and grouped at appropriate levels in the core subjects of Reading, Writing and Moths.

LONGTERM PLAN
RE- We shall be studying how to pray using the whole self ,gestures and movement  from the Prayer Module. Ash Wednesday, Lent and Holy Week will be covered in the in the Liturgical Year module. The major strand for the term will be JESUS- “Jesus – The Fullness of God’s Revelation”. The students will be involved in a practical ways to live and expand their faith.
You will be informed of the content of studies through  your child’s RE exercise book. This book will be sent home on a regular basis with home activities to be completed requiring your input. This exercise allows you to support the learning that happens in class .It is important that you sign each activity on completion and write a comment at the end of the study in each strand.
The Family Whanau book is an invaluable resource for parents to have at home as it gives you all the necessary information about the RE including  the Level 3 programme.

Social Science – CRCKET WORLD CUP- superstars of the game, CWC history, how  teams qualify, comparisons between the current and past CWCs, how communities will be involved with the competition.
