Friendly Afternoon Concert 2013

Last Friday we performed a concert in the Mission Centre. We did a Rakau item, sang a song and performed the sasa.

 Finally we sang a Christmas medley which finished with We Wish You a Merry Christmas.  There was a lady there who gave us yummy lollies. I think our  performance  was  awesome   I  really  enjoyed  doing  the  Rakau  with Leo.

 I hope we can do this for the elderly people next year.

Taylor Swift Concert Experience

 

Last week Sofia and I flew to Auckland with some other friends to see the Taylor Swift concert. When we got to Waldorf Stadium apartment hotel we checked in, dropped our luggage off and went food shopping. When got back to the hotel we settled in and went to sleep. In the morning we all went to explore Auckland and visit the Sky Tower. While we were up there we saw people bungee jump from the building.

 After that we had a quick  dip in the pool and got ready for the conced rt an arrived at Vector Arena around 4:30.We  bought lots of merchandise such as a T-shirt and a  started at 7.30pm.

 The guest star was Neon Trees. The concert was exciting  and my favourite part was when the stage was lifted up. My  favourite song “Sparks Fly” because Swift hugged fans and there were fireworks.

 I really enjoyed the Taylor Swift RED tour concert. I will have to save up again to go back when she returns to New Zealand.

PASIFIKA DAY 2013

On Thursday 28 November we  celebrated the Samoan people in our school by having a Pasifika day. Mrs. Reddy and Railynetta gave Room 5 some Samoan lavalava to wear and leighs made of shells to wear.

At lunch time, instead of our normal lunch, we had Samoan food. There was buns dipped in coconut cream and Samoan pancakes. The buns and pancakes made us very full. It was very delicious lunch.

When it was time for the concert we all brought our rakau sticks and lined up to go to the Mission Centre. Room 2 did the welcome and Room 1 sang a song. Afyer Room 4 ‘s song with beautiful actions,  it was our turn. The boys did the sasa, the girls sang and danced to “Le Aute”.Everyone joined in to do rakau sticks. Room 6 did a wonderful finish with a haka and a Samoan song.

We all enjoyed Pacifica day and we think it is great to have different cultures in our school.                        BY  MIMI

GREAT NEIGHBOURS AWARD!

This morning we had a special Neighbourhood Support  assembly. I was so excited because I got a big award for being the head garden club leader giving great ideas. I got the main award of the year for leading the Garden Club, having great ideas and getting children to respect direction.

In future I will try and get more children to join the Garden Club.

RECONCILIATION - PREPARING FOR CHRISTMAS!

Dear Diary

Father Dan and Father Foot came to our class and talked to us about reconciliation. We prepared ourselves using the Our Father prayer. The priests put chairs under the shade of the trees, and one by one we went to reconciliation.  I went to Father Foot and  talked to him about my faults and after that I said a prayer he told me to do. It was  a Hail Mary and one Glory Be To The Father in our garden outside room 5.
We felt good and will try hard to be more like Jesus thanks to Father Dan and Father Foot.

EARTHQUAKE DRILL TODAY!!!!!!

This afternoon, we were doing our school work when suddenly the bell rang. It was an earthquake drill! Everyone quickly got under a desk as fast as they could and held on. As soon as the bell stopped ringing we went outside to the field. I have to say, this earthquake drill was very unexpected but important for our safety.

MORE SE ZONES ATHLETIC NEWS-ROOM 5 PARTICIPANTS.

At 8.40am, we set off on the bus to Hansen’s Park to compete in the SE Zones Athletics Competition. Once we arrived at the park, we got out of the bus and we went to our sitting spot. We lay out the tarpaulin and put out our flag so we knew where our school was stationed. There was a man who told us about where everything was, and when the events  were  going to happen. The girls did the field events in the morning while the boys did in the afternoon. When all the events were over,we got back on the bus and came back to school. We all had a great time competing.

I went to 4 events - shot put, discus, high jump and relay. The first event I went to was the relay. I was the first one to run then it was Leo, Lingas and Jack. We came 3^rd in the relay. The next event was the shot put and discus. Jack swain came with me. In the shot put I had came 4th and Jack came 15^th. Later we moved onto discus. I think I had came 4^th or 5^th in discus. As soon as I finished my discus Jack went back and I moved onto high jump with my friend Lingas. When all of it was finished we got l our gear to return home.

 I did not make it to Canterbury finals but my brother and my cousin did. One day I hope that I will come first or second in an event.

My favourite activity was discus. The  first throw was really really bad. I warmed up and threw at the side netting. I was embarrassed but it was all okay. My second throw wasn’t that long. I might have come last but I still enjoyed it.                                            By  Finn

 

My best sport at zones was my 80 meter sprint because I tried my best even though I didn’t win. My friends were cheering for me which encouraged me to run harder. I had a great time and I am very proud of myself for trying.                                                        By Lilly

My first event was a 60 metre sprint. I ran and I came second in the heats. When I did the final sprint, Jack and I got a tie at third to last. I also did high jump and long jump. We got third place in the relay. I had a great time competing with other children and going against some of my friends. I hope I make it to the zones next year so I get another chance at the Canterbury champs.

My favourite activity was the 1200 meter run where I came 5^th.My goal next year is to compete  in high  jump and to do better in long jump.In the relays we came 3^rd.At the end of the day we were all tired and puffed but we all had so much fun.

 My best event was 80m sprint. All my friends were cheering for me to win which made nervous. I came fourth out of seven people. A kid from Sumner school won. It was the first time I went to the zones and it was an awesome experience.

My events were long jump, shot put and relay. My best event was long jump because I am really good at it. All the jumpers there were really good and were positive towards each other. I did not go to the Centrals but I am still proud of myself.

My favourite events was shot put and 80 metre sprint.In shot put I came 2# place but in the  sprint I came 4# place but  I tried my best . It was my lucky day because I’m in the Canterbury for shot-put.

Dear Diary
Everyone who was to represent St Anne’s at the South East Zones Athletics arrived at school earlier than normal to get ready for Hansons Park. Once we arrived, everyone looked for a place to sit on the blue tarpaulin that were laid  out for us. Soon after arrival a man welcomed us on a microphone that could be heard from the other side of the park. After that we went to our events. The events you could qualify for were: shot put, discus, relay, sprints, high jump and long jump. We all tried our hardest and  Letone was the only one who got a first. He will take part in the  Centrals  competition with the best in Canterbury. We hope he does well!

R A K A U - USING MAORI FOLK SONG --- " E PAPA" Friday 7 November

We have been finding out a lot of new things in our  Matariki Study. One of the things we have learned is rakau.

 

The games consist of the rhythmic throwing and catching of sticks from person to person. 
  
In olden times these games served as a way of training young warriors to catch enemies' spears in battle.

In more recent times they have been an entertainment at concerts, The sticks one foot long (30 cm) are used-we made ours from rolled up magazines. The players usually sit on the ground facing each other.
Here are some photos of us learning one game in Room 5 before we invited the junior classes to watch it.

PARIHAKA DAY AT ST ANNE’S

Recounts.

This morning when the bell rang we had to go and sit in the lunch circle. Mrs Parker told us when Our Lady Star of The Sea, a school from Sumner, would be coming. The Kapa haka group would sing a wiata to welcome them. After that there would be a liturgy where both Kapa haka groups would perform. This would be followed by a hangi or a sausage sizzle. I can’t wait.

 

When the visitors arrived, I found that my old friend, Monique went to that school. We had a great time chatting about what we’d been doing for the last few months since I last saw her. Beth knew her to, so it wasn’t like we were talking to complete strangers.

First we played noodle tag but it was so hot that none of us were trying very hard. After that we just talked until lunch time. We went up onto the fort but the boys wouldn’t leave us alone. We eventually gave up trying to fend off the boys so we talked where ever no one else was.

When the bell rang we went to sit in the lunch area to wait for the hangi and sausage sizzle to start. I had a sausage because I didn’t like the sound of hangi. My Great Aunt got food poisoning overseas from something like a hangi. Of course I didn’t want that to happen to me. I probably should have given it a go because loads of other people tried it and they didn’t get food poisoning.

After lunch it was time for Star of The Sea to leave. We thanked all the people who made this day possible to happen. Finally  we said goodbye to the school. I hope they come again  so I can catch up with my friends.

Yesterday at 11 am our visitors came who were Our Lady Star of the Sea. They came for Parihaka Day. We welcomed them with a Maori song. Then we read a liturgy. The children from Our Lady Star of the Sea did a kapahaka performance. It was great. Next our kapahaka group did a song which was a waiata.

After the second session we went to the circle for lunch. Our visitors had lunch first and then we had our lunch. There was a hangi or a sausage sizzle . I had a sausage which was yum!

At the end of the afternoon the children and the teachers from Star of the Sea went back to school happy and so were we. What an awesome day it was!

Preparing For Parihaka Day!

We made rakau sticks for ourselves and for the Year5 and  students from Our Lady-Star of the Sea.We were going to learn to use them in a song called "E Hine Hoki Mai Ra - O Darling Come Back to Me" but there was not enough time. We did however learn to sing the song.

Later on we shall do this as part of our MATARIKI study. Keep looking!

Mrs Reddy’s Classroom Newsletter

Greetings to you all and I hope that you  all had a lovely holiday and the children are well rested for the last term of the year. I had a lovely time in Brisbane for 10 days and wish I could have brought the warmth back with me..

We have a very busy term planned which will keep us well occupied. On Wednesday we are having a retreat at Te Rangi Marie Centre(see attached letter) and athletics training in preparation for the school  and South East zones  competitions begin this week.

Thanks for your support of the Mission Fair and I am very proud of my students who organized and managed the whole event .

 

 

The students will continue to need a lot of guidance and support in keeping the routines to engage in learning.. I hope that  the children will work on becoming self-propelled learners  and develop this responsibility with a positive attitude.I shall endeavour to do the best I can to ensure their progress in all areas. The  assertive discipline policy in my class will be continued to help  those children who still need help in acquiring  appropriate behaviours  and work habits.

LONGTERM PLAN

RE- We shall be studying COMMUNION OF SAINTS STRAND but first we willl be completing the Social Justice Strand assessments.Liturgical Year Module -  ADVENT and CHRISTMAS will also be studied towards the end of the term. The COMMUNION OF SAINTS STRAND will focus on Mary - a model to people about how to follow Jesus. Please refer to the Family-Whanau Book for further information.

We shall also be responsible for organizing the End of Year Mass and students will be leading the whole school for this occasion.
